Laurette was my great-grandmother, and I have some very vivid memories of her. She was always knitting, sitting in her rocking chair, making the wooden floor of my grandmother Léonne’s house creak gently beneath her. She lived there throughout my childhood. She would always show me what she was working on, and I would watch, fascinated. As a child, I wore dresses, sweaters, and little purses that she had knitted for me.
Today, I’m honoring her with this pattern, which bears her name: Laurette. It is a tribute to a creative and wonderful craftswoman who, I think, would have truly loved its simple, timeless silhouette.
MATERIALS
— One skein of Jamieson & Smith 2 Ply Jumper Weight + two strands of mohair (held together)
I used Knitting for Olive mohair (225 m / 25 g), but any equivalent will work.
— 4.5 mm needles, or whatever size you need to obtain gauge
You can use straight or circular needles (a 32-inch / 81 cm cable is recommended).
— Tapestry needle for sewing
— Stitch markers
— Gauge: 16 stitches x 4 inches / 10 cm x 24 rows in stockinette stitch on 4.5 mm needles, holding one strand of fingering-weight yarn and two strands of mohair together.
YARN QUANTITY
— Size 1: 180 meters of fingering-weight yarn and 325 meters of mohair
— Size 2: 215 meters of fingering-weight yarn and 370 meters of mohair
To determine how many skeins to purchase, simply divide the required yardage by the yardage per skein. Yardage estimates are rounded up to make sure you have enough yarn.
